COGWA Announcement

MEAC Chairman selected
During the December meeting of the Ministerial Board of Directors the final committee for Church of God, a Worldwide Association, was appointed. The name of this committee is "Moral and Ethics Assessment Committee," or MEAC for short. This committee is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

"The committee is established for the purpose of insuring that egregiously unethical or immoral conduct by an elder will be addressed appropriately and without partiality. The committee is established to hear appeals in certain cases of removal from the ministry or removal from the MEAC or Doctrine Committee.

"The committee is also established to hear appeals on an interpretation of the Bylaws or the Constitution in the event that the MBOD's interpretation of either of these documents is appealed by the president or by an individual MBOD member" (from Article 6.7 of the Bylaws).

To be a member of this committee, an elder must meet very specific criteria:

"The MEAC is made up of five elders, who are each at least 60 years of age and who each have a minimum of 20 years of pastoral experience or the equivalent number of years in the administration of a Church of God Organization..." (from Article 6.7 of the Bylaws).

In December of 2011, five men were nominated by the president and approved by the MBOD to serve on this committee: Les McCullough, Michael Hanisko, Larry Neff, Paul Suckling and Michael Blackwell. On Tuesday, Jan. 3, the committee met for the first time and, following the meeting, selected Larry Neff as its first chairman by a secret ballot.

Update on Curtis Drewniak
Curtis Drewniak was scheduled to have pelvic reconstructive surgery this week, but the surgery was cancelled because of an infection that has set in. Curt has developed a mild case of pneumonia from being on the ventilator, but now is running a fever of 103 degrees in spite of ice packs and being on medication. Now doctors are concerned that if surgery isn’t performed soon the bones may begin to heal together improperly. There are concerns about nerve damage, paralysis and even death.

On a positive note, after nine days Curt’s stomach and intestines have begun to function once again. This means that for the first time since the accident he is able to absorb nutrients. This is a big step forward. Curt and his family would greatly appreciate your continued prayers as they go through this ordeal.

New Hymnals
The new Church of God, a Worldwide Association, hymnal is now at the printer! A great deal of God’s intervention and blessing has been evident throughout the process. A dedicated team of volunteers from six states has worked tirelessly to make this hymnal a reality. Many, many long days have been given—and many hours of sleep have been sacrificed—to bring this gift to God and the brethren.

If all continues on track, we will have this beautiful book shipped directly to all eight U.S. Feast of Tabernacles sites! Unfortunately, due to the extremely tight production schedule, we are unable to provide hymnals to our international sites at this time; but we will be providing them as soon as possible after the Feast of Tabernacles. We will make electronic copies available for international sites along with a slide presentation that can be used to display the words on a big screen.

The new hymnal will contain a total of 186 hymns. Alongside many of our old favorites are about 30 new hymns that were not in our previous hymnal. The brethren will enjoy learning these new hymns as they sing praises to God. The congregational copies are a deep purple with gold foil print on the cover. Not only will the hymnal be beautiful, it should also be durable due to the Smyth sewn binding we have selected.

We have planned for 8,000 hymnals (4,000 personal and 4,000 congregational). Pastors will be making arrangements to have a volunteer from each congregation pick up the congregational hymnals at the congregation’s assigned Festival site.

The Church has arranged for a personal copy of the hymnal for each head-of-household. This hymnal is given as a gift to the membership to say “thank you” for your faithfulness and dedication to God, to His way of life and to the Church. These personal copies are a different color than the congregational copies—slate gray with silver foil printing. They likewise will be both beautiful and functional.

Distribution plan—personal copies. An orderly plan for distributing free copies of the personal hymnal has been established. In the weeks between now and the Feast of Tabernacles, pastors will be asked to print and distribute a Personal Hymnal Voucher to each head-of-household in their congregations. Each member will need to bring his Personal Hymnal Voucher to the Hymnal Distribution Booth at the Feast during the first three days of the Feast to receive his personal hymnal.

What about those U.S. members traveling internationally or members who are unable to attend the Feast? These members may fill out a voucher from their pastor and then give it to a local member who will be attending a U.S. Feast site. That member will claim their copy for them and bring it back after the Feast.

Pianist’s version. At this point in time, we are still on schedule to receive wire-bound copies for pianists and song leaders. We have calculated our printing of these copies assuming we will have an average of three song leaders and two pianists per congregation for a total of 500 copies. Pastors will be polled to see how many copies they feel they need to adequately serve the brethren. These copies will be sent back to the local areas via the volunteers that are carrying the congregational copies.

Donations to offset cost. The administration has approved the accepting of donations to offset the cost of developing our hymnal. Feast coordinators will be asked to prepare to accept donations at the Hymnal Donation Booth and/or the Information Table during the Feast. We recommend collecting donations every day except the Sabbath and holy days. Festival coordinators will be sent printed and verbal announcements to this effect.

Summary. With a good dose of organization and cooperation, the hymnal distribution should go very smoothly. It will be a great boost to the members and a great joy to sing praises to God from our own hymnal at the Feast of Tabernacles in a few short weeks!

Fall holy day activity books and guides for preteen children and their parents.
As we have done for the past few years, we will provide children (at two grade levels, K-2 and 3-5) with activity booklets, and we will provide their parents with an accompanying guidebook. We encourage parents to teach their own children about God and His holy days. We believe teaching our children about God is a biblical mandate for parents (Deuteronomy 6:7). It involves parents actually teaching their own children and not leaving that responsibility solely to others. Several recent studies indicate that the personal example and teaching of children by parents is far more effective than any other form of teaching children about God and His ways.

We sincerely hope you enjoy the books. They were prepared and reviewed by parents, schoolteachers and elders to assist parents in this important part of our children’s biblical education—God’s annual fall holy days. We have left it to the individual Festival coordinator to schedule Festival youth classes at the Feast site if he has space. If classes are possible, facilitators can reinforce what the parents have already covered with their children. We have also encouraged Festival coordinators to consider planning a social event for families with preteen children at the Feast site to help children socialize and assist families in networking while at the Feast.

Pastors have ordered activity booklets and parent guides, which will be shipped to pastors for distribution to parents before the Feast of Trumpets. Please remember to take these booklets with you to the Feast. There will be a few extra booklets at each Feast site for parents and preteens who may not have received them in their local areas prior to the fall holy days.

Update on Ed Figgs
had a much better day today. He was up and around a lot more, and he found out that the infection did not get near his pacemaker, so they will NOT have to remove it. Also his kidney is getting strong. These are all encouraging signs. The only negative is that his spleen is somewhat infected, but the doctors hope the antibiotic takes care of it. Nevertheless, please pray that God removes the infection from Ed’s spleen and throughout the rest of his body.

Date Announced: September 15th, 2011

Prayer Request

Ed Figgs
As of this morning, the doctors are now saying that Ed did not suffer another heart attack, but has a staph infection. It is the infection that is causing the heart and kidney problems and they are placing him on anti-biotics. The infection is also located near the area where Ed has his pacemaker. This is serious because if the infection is not eliminated, they may have to remove the pacemaker. They will continue to monitor Ed before making any type of decision regarding the pacemaker. It appears Ed was misdiagnosed, because the whole reason he and Sharon went to the hospital in the first place was because Ed had a fever and the chills, which was probably the staph infection coming on. Ed and Sharon persisted until the doctors backed down and re-examined him only to find that he indeed had a staph infection. We thank God for revealing what was truly happening. The infection is still serious so please continue to pray for God’s healing

Update on Curtis Drewniak
Curtis Drewniak is slowly moving through the steps that are medically required for him to recover from the forklift accident. His bladder has been repaired and the internal abdominal bleeding has been stopped. A couple days ago doctors were able to close the abdominal incision so they can begin work on the pelvis fractures.

His parents report that yesterday was a better day for Curt. Transitioning was attempted several times and the tests worked well. He was given less of the medication to keep him in coma so he did open his eyes several times. He can hear, but they try not to stimulate him too much because he gets confused and frustrated. Doctors have found a comfortable pain medication level and it seems to keep him sleeping and calm. He opened his eyes for his wife, Christine, and moved them to see the sunshine. She turned his head and he tried to smile, as much as he could with several tube in his mouth. Curt’s vitals are holding well.

Update on Ed Figgs
Mr. Figgs suffered a heart attack, and is still too weak to receive a battery of tests at this time. There is also concern regarding his kidney which may not be functioning at 100% capacity. Les Pratt
Les went into the hospital Sabbath afternoon complaining of stomach pains. After tests on his pancreas and bladder, the doctors now feel that Les has some type of parasite and will begin to treat him, they also want to perform a colonoscopy which will happen this afternoon. There is an outside chance that if the colonoscopy is successful, Les may return home. Your continued prayers would be much appreciated.

Update on Ed Figgs
Ed is going to be re-admitted to the hospital. The doctors are pretty certain that Ed may have suffered a heart attack due to his low blood levels last week. Though he was moving slow, Ed was able make the trip with Sharon to the ER and was preparing to be admitted.

Les Pratt
Les woke up early this morning still having severe pain. The doctors have cancelled the EKG that was planned. Instead they will do a Barium Dye ct scan to see what is going on internally. Update on Matthew Lucas
Matthew Lucas has been experiencing chronic pain in his sternum since his heart transplant the first of June. His doctors at first thought Matthew may have some sort of infection. However, after being treated with antibiotics over the last two weeks, there hasn’t been any improvement.

While Matthew was having his regularly scheduled heart biopsy today, his doctors decided to admit him into the hospital for a battery of tests. They are hoping to rule out the possibility of something more serious than an infection. On a positive note, the results of the heart biopsy came back with a zero rejection factor!

Curits Drewniak
Maurice and Josie Drewniak, members of the Fargo, North Dakota, congregation, are requesting prayers for their son, Curtis, a member in Worcester, Massachusetts. Wednesday afternoon, Curtis was running diagnostics on a forklift when something failed and the forklift fell on top of him, resulting in injuries that could have been fatal. At the time of their call, Curtis was in surgery to repair a perforated bladder. Sometime in the next day or two another surgery will be performed to pin or repair a double fracture of his pelvis. He also has a minor fracture in the lower lumbar region of his spine, but doctors feel that will heal without surgery.

Curtis is currently in the Yale University Hospital in a medically-induced coma. His condition is stable, and the prognosis is positive.

Date Announced: September 8th, 2011

Prayer Request

Ed Figgs
Last night Mr Figgs' blood level dropped below the level that would have allowed the doctors to begin their tests. They needed his levels to be at 8 before the tests, and last night his levels were up as high as 8.7. Unfortunately, they declined during the night to 7.8 which means Ed may require a blood transfusion, which the doctors would rather not do. So we are in a holding pattern to see if Ed’s levels rise again. Please pray to God in this regard that his blood levels would rise to above 8.0

Mr. Ed Figgs was admitted to the hospital early this morning with what the doctors described as internal bleeding. Sharon just returned home after a very exhausting night. Please pray for God’s healing for Ed and that he would direct the hands of the physicians when they begin their battery of tests on Ed. Sharon just spoke to him and though weak, his spirits were good.

Mrs. Benita G. Baring, 55, of the Diatagon congregation in the Philippines. She fell from a chair on June 12, 2011, when she reached out to hang one of their mosquito net ties. Consequently, her right femur was severely fractured. Due to certain constraints, she underwent corrective surgery last Friday, July 29, at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (DMC) in Davao City.

Unfortunately, during her second visit to the hospital last Sunday, one of her three attending surgeons stated that he found cancer cells that might be emanating from her thyroid goiter. Worse yet, the cancer cells are already metastasizing and the surgeon will refer her case to an oncologist to locate the origin and for further checks.

Update on Sam Dungan
Sam Dungan received a report this week from the respiratory specialist team of doctors in Birmingham, Alabama, that he would not be a candidate for a lung transplant. Damage to his upper respiratory system (i.e., the pathways leading to the lungs) was so severe that a lung transplant will provide little or no benefit. Although this news was quite discouraging to Sam and his wife Shaleena, they continue to be at peace with it all knowing their lives are in God’s hands. When they asked their primary physician what the next step would be, he responded, “Pray for a miracle.” That’s what they’ve been doing, and they are comforted knowing many of you are praying for this as well.

Update on Les Pratt
Mr Pratt was discharged early this afternoon and is now home! We thank our loving Father for His mercy and intervention. His test all came back negative, and with the exception of his potassium level being a little low, Les is doing well. His recall of things earlier this week are still sketchy, and because of the type of seizure Les had, Virginia state law requires he not be permitted to operate a motor vehicle for six months. So your continued prayers that Les is fully healed are most appreciated at this time. If all goes well after six months, Les will be driving Dawn to Passover services next year! Les will return to work this coming Monday, and hopes to be at services this coming Sabbath.

Les Pratt
Mr. Les Pratt suffered a seizure this morning around 5am. Dawn phoned me and Gloria and I met her at the Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville. The doctors have decided to admit him for a couple days and so far all his vitals have come back normal. It is common to suffer a memory lapse when one suffers from a seizure, and Les is unable to remember anything from yesterday late afternoon to this morning. The doctors again say this is normal, and that he should have some recall to the events that happened yesterday.

Charles Crabtree, Jr
Mr. Crabtree's son, Charles Jr. suffered an injury yesterday when he was changing a tire on his utility van. While attempting to adjust the jack so that the inflated tire would fit, the jack slipped causing the van to pin Charles as it fell. Charles suffered a dislocated shoulder and some of his muscle was pulled away from the bone. The best healing according to the doctors, would be the muscle re-attaching itself on its own. They really do not want to do surgery unless they have to, which would mean the potential for Charles to lose mobility in his shoulder. He is an electrician and requires the use of his arms and shoulders for his work.

Sam Dungan
Sam Dungan, a 37-year-old member in the Laurel, Mississippi, congregation, continues to battle a severe respiratory condition which resulted when he inhaled toxic chemicals while working at a local industrial plant about fifteen months ago. His lung capacity has diminished to the point where doctors are now considering lung transplant surgery. Sam meets with the transplant team in a little over a week to discuss this possibility. He frequently battles fluid build-up complications (e.g., lungs filling with fluid; legs swelling and turning purple). Just this week doctors again increased his medication to assist him in breathing.

Update on Matt Lucas
Prayers are once again requested for Matt Lucas. He is scheduled to have a heart biopsy this morning to see how the heart is functioning. Under normal circumstances this would be a routine procedure, but with Matt's lung capacity, or lack thereof, the doctors are more concerned.

Due to an aspiration episode Sunday, Matt's lungs are compromised even more, and the threat of pneumonia setting in is the cause for the doctor’s concern.

Matt's mental state has somewhat improved but he continues to be restless and agitated.

His wife, Esther, and children Josiah, Magnolia, Melissa, Michelle and Eric, along with many other extended family members, want to thank all of you for your love and support during this time of trial – the cards and letters from all over the world were especially meaningful and helpful to them. Thomas was a true family "patriarch," a pillar in the Raleigh congregation, and a friend of many immigrants in the local Karen community who, like him and his family, had fled from the persecutions in Myanmar (Burma). He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but we know that his battle has been won.

COGWA Announcement

Festival Registration
This year registration for the Feast of Tabernacles in the United States will take place online June 5-19. At the Feast of Tabernacles website (http://feast.cogwa.org) everyone will be able to read about Feast sites and register for the site he or she plans to attend by clicking on the "Registration" button located at the top of the home page. Feast advisers or friends are asked to register members who do not have Internet access. Those being asked to register online are brethren living in the United States (whether they plan to attend a U.S. site or one outside the U.S.) and those living outside the U.S. who are planning to attend a U.S. site.

Festival registration for members of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association (COGWA) is especially important this year since, in addition to gathering Festival information, we will use the registration process to collect information for our member database. Of course, the submission of all information is voluntary. At the beginning of the process, registrants will be asked for basic contact information and whether they want to be considered members of COGWA. Registrants who indicate "Yes" will be asked for member information, including names of other family members, local congregation, their date of baptism and their 10-digit personal identification number (PIN) from their previous organization. (If one doesn't have his previous PIN or doesn't wish to provide it, that is also acceptable.)
Registrants who indicate that they do not wish to be considered members of COGWA will not be asked for member information.

Please note that, in addition to registering on this Feast of Tabernacles website, U.S. residents who wish to transfer to a Feast site in another country will also need to contact the coordinator of that Feast site for approval. U.S. residents who will not be able to attend the Feast of Tabernacles are asked to provide their member data on the member website (http://members.cogwa.org) if they wish to be included in the COGWA member database.

When registering for the Feast, each person aged 18 and older or the primary contact for a family unit (defined as family members normally living together) will be asked to provide his or her name, mailing address and email address. Registrants will also be asked how many in this family unit are seniors (aged 65 and over), how many are young adults (18 to 35), how many are single, how many are teens (12 to 17) and how many are children (up to 11). Additionally, those who use wheelchairs, are hard of hearing, require handicapped parking or need language translation will be able to indicate their needs. The last step in registration will be the opportunity to volunteer to serve in various ways at the Feast.

This information collected will help Feast coordinators plan for seating in the auditorium, determine space requirements for activities and coordinate volunteers. Additionally, the email address provided will allow coordinators to send details about activities and any other needed announcements to each person registered to attend that Feast site.

If for some reason you need to change the site you will attend, please fill out the same registration form on the Feast of Tabernacles website and indicate that you need to replace an existing registration. Because most sites in the United States will have sufficient space, we are not expecting to have to close any sites. Should it become necessary to close a site to additional attendees, the website will announce the closing and not accept further registration for that site. Thank you in advance for your help.

Fundamental Beliefs Sermon Project
We are currently in the process of recording a sermon for each of our 20 Fundamental Beliefs, to be published in video on our main COGWA website. The 20 doctrines have been assigned to six ministers who had experience teaching prior to the formation of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association. They are Jim Franks, David Johnson, Clyde Kilough, Tom Kirkpatrick, Ralph Levy and Joel Meeker. The Church very much appreciates the assistance of Jerry Rehor, from the Louisville congregation, and David Good, from Houston, in the recording, editing and presentation of these messages.

Prayer Request

Matthew Lucas
Prayers are requested for Matthew Lucas, age 30, who has been in Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, for the last five months awaiting a heart transplant because of a congenital heart defect.

A donor's heart became available this evening and Matt is now in surgery which will last at least 11 or 12 hours. Anne (Dungan) Lucas, Matt's wife, is requesting prayers for him, as well as the surgical team involved in the transplant. The donor's heart appears to be very strong and healthy which is very encouraging. However, due to the number of blood transfusions the donor received before he was removed from life support, there are concerns about having a perfect blood match for Matt.

Matt and Anne have two daughters; one is three years old and the other is 11 months old. Your prayers for the entire family would be greatly appreciated.

Tyler Whynaucht
Prayers are requested for Tyler Whynaucht, 15-year-old son of Mark and Cheryl Whynaucht of the Springfield, Missouri, congregation. Tyler has epilepsy. Last year he contracted Rheumatic Fever from a strep infection. The Rheumatic Fever resulted in a rare spin-off disease that left Tyler unable to control the muscles in his arms, legs, and even in his head. He has been struggling with this, making some progress, and then losing part of the progress. This morning his parents took him to the emergency room because he was suffering from constant seizures. He became unresponsive, but was still having constant seizures and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Children's Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. Your prayers for God's intervention and healing would be appreciated.

Bible Education Weekends
The Church is pleased to announce its first two Bible education weekends, to be held this summer. The first will take place over the weekend of July 16 and 17 in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, area. The second will be on Aug. 13 and 14 in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida. David Johnson and Ralph Levy will be the instructors for both weekends, with class subjects to be announced shortly.

The Dallas/Fort Worth weekend will offer nine hours of biblical instruction, in addition to Sabbath services. Sabbath afternoon classes will be held in the usual location, the Unity Church of Dallas Sanctuary, and classes will end by 5:30 p.m. Sunday's classes will be held in the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra auditorium, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (exact schedule to be confirmed). Coffee, soft drinks and light refreshments will be offered in the Dallas location, but participants will be on their own for lunch. Please contact Dallas pastor Doug Horchak (doug.horchak@cogwa.org) to register for this weekend. More details will be announced at later date, but it is helpful for planning purposes to have preliminary numbers for the expected attendance.

The Tampa/St. Petersburg weekend will be held in the usual St. Petersburg church location and will feature two days of classes. Please email Tampa/St. Petersburg pastor David Treybig (david.treybig@cogwa.org) to register for the weekend. Details concerning class subjects and scheduling will be forthcoming.

Prayer Request

Assistance for member in Joplin, MO
Many are asking about helping the brethren in the Joplin area in the wake of the severe tornado that struck that area on Sunday afternoon. The local COGWA pastor for Joplin is Mike Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell has been on the scene for the past couple of days assisting the brethren. He plans to be in Joplin this Sabbath to conduct services. As far as Church members are concerned, everyone has been accounted for. We had two members who lost their homes and a third who suffered substantial damage to his home. All three have other family members in the area with whom they can stay temporarily.

Once we get more information as to any specific needs of the brethren, we will pass it along to everyone. The Church will provide assistance for the families once we confirm their needs. At this point in time, those who desire to make financial contributions may do so by sending them to the Church's assistance fund at the Orlando address for COGWA (P.O. Box 781885, Orlando, FL 32878-1885). By labeling it as "assistance fund," it will be used to assist members in need, not only in Joplin but wherever else help may be needed. Even as we write this announcement, storms are still causing damage throughout the South and Midwest.

Thomas Ko
Your prayers are requested for Thomas Ko, who has been hospitalized in critical condition due to complications arising from several health problems. Mr. Ko has been battling cancer and diabetes for several years but recently his health began to rapidly deteriorate and last Friday, May 13, he took a turn for the worse. His immune system essentially shut down, leading to a major battle against infection and other resulting complications. Yesterday surgery was successfully performed to relieve bleeding in his brain. The doctors are hopeful that will stop further bleeding and that he will return to consciousness soon.

Prayer Request

Ken & Jennifer Danapas
The Danapas family was in a head-on auto accident this past Sabbath. A vehicle veered into their lane and hit them even though Ken swerved over into his own ditch. The impact hit the driver side of the car around the driver door. It broke the support between the front and rear doors and destroyed the rear door.

Their son, Luke, was severely injured in his car seat in that part of the car. He was life-flighted to Children's Hospital in Dallas where he was pronounced dead the next morning on what would have been his third birthday.

Their three-month-old daughter has a small bruise above her right eye and both Ken and his wife, Jennifer, are uninjured. Obviously this is an incredibly traumatic time for them and Jennifer's request was for prayers to get the terrible images of her son's injuries out of her mind.

Luke had been diagnosed with autism but was a very healthy and active child. The family is relieved to know God's truth about the future for their son, but really needs our prayers right now for the comfort only God can give in such a terrible situation.

Amy Hargarten - Update
Ms Hargarten's condition is deteriorating rapidly with this very fast growing cancer. She has been in the hospital twice this week, and today received more news on the cancer.

They suspected intestinal blockage; however, a CT scan revealed no blockage, but did reveal the extent of the cancer. The doctor told them this is stage 4 ovarian cancer. It has spread to the uterus, lungs and liver with a large tumor in the liver. The doctor reiterated that it is not treatable or curable from a medical standpoint. Chemotherapy might extend her life a little, but it also comes with a large number of side effects, and the doctor really didn't recommend chemo.

They are going to send her home with hospice care to make her as comfortable as possible in dealing with what the doctor called end-of-life issues. Please continue to pray for Amy and her family, for God's healing and intervention, but also for comfort, strength and encouragement. Jim and Amy have five children, the youngest is 13.
